Painting with Light

The mysterious sculptures located on a hill at Stephens Lake Park are the result of a ceramics art project that has become a staple of the park. Many local residents are often confused by its presence at first glance and theorize that it may be a meeting spot for cults, while others assume its only purpose is to serve as an authentic decoration.

About:
The College Photographer of the Year contest has launched many famous photojournalism careers. At 20 years old, Matt Eich is a hard-working college student enjoying life with his girlfriend, Melissa, when he learns he has won the contest. As his dream of traveling the globe with his camera becomes a reality, he learns that he has another budding reality at home: Melissa is pregnant.

As these two young people navigate some very hard choices, they also stop to document this time in their lives, sharing their thoughts and fears for the road ahead. What results is Love in the First Person, a touching account of what it means to grow up.

Multiple Flash

Laura Prather, 23, enjoys a square dance with her partner on Saturday night at the Hallsville Community Center. A group of about 80 people meet at the center once a month for food, music, fellowship and square dancing. According to John White, who started the event with his wife Betty, anyone is welcome to go, including those outside the Hallsville community - his only rules being that they dance, have fun and don't bring any alcohol.

Here's how it was done:

Allison stood on a chair and bounced strobe 1 off the ceiling. I held strobe 2 directly towards the subject, using a light orange gel.

Single Flash Assignment

MU student Casey Stuck takes a break from studying to share some love with his two-year-old dog, Fonzie, who he adopted from the Central Missouri Human Society in July 2010.

This is how I did it:

I wanted to create a softer light to portray a more light-hearted mood, so I bounced the flash off a white ceiling, holding my hand behind the flash to provide a bit of fill on their faces.

Leann McLaughlin and Dan Sheehan perform improv during Comedy Wars, a comedy troupe started by MU student Todd Geritz in 1999 . Comedy Wars is held at 9:30 pm every Wednesday in Bengal Lair, located in MU's Memorial Union.

This is how I did it:

I couldn't get extremely close to the subjects, and because the distance the light from my flash would've had to travel was too great, I used direct flash.

Metal and Glass

My part of the assignment was metal:

Making shots can get messy, especially after having a few. And there is a kind of science to mixing a successful shot, involving tedious measurements. Even a half jigger too much of one ingredient can turn a seemingly tasty drink into a nasty concoction.

Classmate Portrait

MU junior Caitlin Miller is heavily involved in activities on campus, including a sorority. She is also in the middle of changing her area of study - from photojournalism to magazine journalism, which, combined with her busy schedule, makes her feel pretty stressed out at times. However, Miller always remains upbeat and bubbly because she feels confident that she is making a change toward something she truly wants to do.

Portrait Inspiration

I chose this portrait because I feel it does a good job at expressing who the subject is as a person. The subject is in her natural element, relaxed and being herself, which makes the photo seem more real. It was shot in available light, but under the shade of the tree, so no harsh shadows fall on the woman's face, which would have taken away from the "happy" feel of the photo.
